Department of German Fellowships and Grants
Block Grant Fellowships
1. For first year graduate students, awarded with
admission to the Ph.D. program.
2. For travel support to give a paper at a conference. Ongoing
3. For summer stipends to take an intensive language course, conduct
research or prepare for the qualifying examination. Application deadline: early February.
Max Kade Fellowship
Awarded to a first year graduate student with admission
Max Kade Summer Fellowship
Several awards are available each summer to support graduate students who plan to attend an intensive German language program in Germany.
Outstanding GSI Award
Each year the department gives two awards in
recognition of outstanding teaching in the German language program.
Candidates for the award can be nominated by students, fellow GSIs,
and faculty members. Announced in early February.
Steinway Award
For a scholarly paper on German language, literature, culture,
or Germanic linguistics, written since April the previous year. Announced in early March.

The Dissertation Completion Fellowship (DCF)
The DCF program involves the following activities:
- Predissertational research and writing in departmental research seminars.
- Two required advanced research papers in the literature & culture QE (Ph.D. Qualifying Examination), frequently related to later dissertation work.
- Linguistic research papers and fieldwork feeding QE formulation of dissertation project.
- Prospectus Conference with the dissertation committee, required by the end of the semester after the QE.
- Regular meetings with the dissertation director throughout the year.
- Regular discussion of chapter drafts with the dissertation director and with dissertation committee members.
- Annual required conference with at least two Ph.D. dissertation committee members.
- Annual required report to Graduate Division on progress in candidacy in the doctoral program.
- Student research presentations in our Noon Colloquium series.
- Participation in dissertation writing workshops available on campus.
- Conference presentations nationally and internationally, e.g. in the context of the Vienna/Tübingen/Harvard/Berkeley graduate research and conference group, with one annual conference; at the annual Semiotic Circle of California meeting, and at the biennial Berkeley Germanic Linguistics Roundtable conference.
Conference Travel Grants
Awards to allow students to attend professional conferences.
Applicants must be in the final stages of their graduate work and
planning to present a paper on their dissertation research at the
conference they are attending. Ongoing
Graduate Opportunity Program (GOP) Dissertation-Year Award
For Graduate Opportunity Program fellows who are in or
approaching their final dissertation research/writing year and who are
also within their department's Normative Time. The award provides a
$15,000 stipend plus registration fees for one year only and is
intended to help GOP fellows complete their dissertation in their
final year of study. Ongoing
Graduate Division Summer Grant (formerly Humanities Research
Grant)
Designed to provide financial assistance to doctoral students
in the humanities, social sciences, and professional schools during
the summer months.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Awards: One-Year Awards
and Summer Awards
Enables students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents
to acquire a high level of competence in one or more foreign
languages. Fellowships are awarded to students in modern foreign
language and area studies, with priority given to students in the
humanities, social sciences, and professional fields. For academic
year awards, entering students must submit the combined Graduate
Application for Admission and Fellowships by the departmental
deadline. Continuing students should pick up an application and apply
directly to the Graduate Fellowships Office, 318 Sproul Hall, by
February 2. Summer FLAS applications also are available at that office
and are due by March 1.

Chancellor's Dissertation-Year Fellowships
For outstanding students in the humanities and social
sciences. Applicants must be advanced to candidacy at the time of the
award and expect to finish their dissertations during the fellowship
year. The Graduate Division requests nominations from departments in
the spring semester.

Mentored Research Award
Gives academically promising graduate students the opportunity
to do research that they would not be able to do otherwise and helps
develop and strengthen their working relationships with faculty
advisers. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident whose
background and life experiences enhance the diversity within the
department or discipline. The Graduate Division requests nominations
from departments in the spring
semester.

University of California Dissertation-Year Fellowship
Awarded to eligible graduate students whose doctoral work will
be completed by the end of the program and who demonstrate strong
potential for university teaching and research. Must be a U.S. citizen
or permanent resident whose background and life experiences enhance
the level of diversity within the department or discipline. The
Graduate Division requests nominations from departments in the spring
semester.

Awarded to outstanding continuing students enrolled at any
University of California campus who plan to conduct advanced research
on a subject for which source materials are available in the Bancroft

Extramural Fellowships
This is a partial
list of extramural and University fellowships. For more information on these
and other fellowships awarded by government agencies, foundations, and

Fulbright IIE and Other Grants for Graduate Study Abroad Applicants
must be U.S. citizens holding a B.A. degree or equivalent before the
beginning date of the grant. Provides round-trip travel, tuition,
books, and stipend for one academic year. Approximately 900 awards are
available for study in over 70 countries. Applies to course work,
master's or dissertation research.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA)
Grants
For full-time dissertation research overseas in modern foreign
language and area studies by U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Funding is for 6 to 12 months. Grants are not awarded for projects
focusing on Western Europe or for research in countries where the U.S.
has no diplomatic representation.

DAAD for Study in Germany
For Berkeley undergraduate seniors, graduate students, and
postdoctoral researchers (2 years or less beyond the Ph.D.) to
undertake up to 10 months study and research in Germany during the
2004-2005 academic year

Humboldt Research Fellowship (also summer research
fellowships)
For scholars in the humanities who hold a doctoral degree and
have sufficient German proficiency to conduct the proposed
research.

The Berlin Program Fellowship
The
program accepts applications from U.S. nationals or permanent
residents who are full-time graduate students in the social sciences
or humanities and who have completed all coursework required for the
Ph.D. Also eligible are Ph.D.'s who have received their doctorates
within the past two calendar years.

International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) Awards
U.S. citizens who are affiliated full time with a North
American college or university are eligible for academic exchange
