February 16th Beresina oder Die letzten Tage der Schweiz (dir. Daniel Schmid, 1999) A Russian woman (Yelena Panova) accepts a job as a prostitute so she can live in Switzerland -- a country she's obsessed with. But when her employers (Geraldine Chaplin and Ulrich Noethen) try to send her back home, she stirs up a scandal by exposing their sexy venture and upper-class clientele. Her whistle-blowing throws genteel Switzerland into political and social upheaval in director Daniel Schmid's dark comedy. March 11th German Graduate Student Conference on “The Neighbor” Screening of: Siamo Italiani (dir. Alexander Seiler, 1964) this screening will be in the Nestrick Room (Dwinelle 142) at 6:15 pm March 30th Schweizermacher (dir. Rolf Lyssy, 1978) Max Bodmer and Moritz Fischer, the leading characters in this ironic, satirical comedy dealing with becoming - and living as - a Swiss citizen, are members of the Cantonal Police entrusted with the delicate task of examining foreigners who are candidates for Swiss citizenship. Different people have their own experiences when confronted with the various methods that can be employed in an investigation of this kind. April 13th Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters, dir. Stefan Ruzowitzky, 2007) Facing an ethical quandary, Jewish master forger Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) must choose between abetting the Nazis and saving his own skin in this taut, Oscar-winning drama based on actual events during World War II. Assembled at a death camp, a cadre of printers, artists and chiselers is tasked with counterfeiting currencies to weaken Allied economies. But will Sorowitsch's conscience begin to gnaw at him as the war draws to a close? April 27th Revanche (dir. Götz Speilmann, 2008) In a ragged section of Vienna, hardened ex-con Alex (Johannes Krisch) works as an assistant in a brothel, where he falls for Ukrainian hooker Tamara (Irina Potapenko). They hope for escape, but their plans unexpectedly intersect with the lives of a rural cop (Andreas Lust) and his seemingly content wife (Ursula Strauss). Austrian Director Götz Spielmann's Oscar-nominated drama is a tense, existential, and moving portrait of vengeance and redemption.
