Consider a Double Major
Are you studying Business or Economics?
Consider that Germany is the third largest economy in the world, that many German companies are global (Bertelsmann, VW, Daimler-Chrysler, Bayer, Krupp, Deutsche Bank) and that many American companies have offices in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. You've learned about the effects of increasing global trade: be prepared by studying the language of the largest European economy. Proficiency in German (achieved in 4 semesters) is bound to help you in your job search.
- We offer Business German and courses on contemporary German society and politics.
- Exchange programs allow for internships with one of 3,500 German companies.
Are you studying International Relations or PEIS?
Consider that in today's global era it is more important than ever to be familiar with political and cultural systems outside your own. Germany plays a major role in the political economy of industrial societies, in international education, in comparative politics, and in issues relating to migration and multiculturalism.
- The Education Abroad Program offers a European and Global Economics program.
- We have close links with the multidisciplinary Center for German and European Studies.
- Our faculty is engaged in multicultural research projects, and welcomes research apprentices.
Are you considering Law School?
International Law is a huge and growing field. With trade barriers disappearing, international investment the norm, and intellectual property now exchangeable instantaneously around the world, the future of the law lies across national borders. Top law schools from Columbia to Yale expect you to be prepared. Studying a foreign language will help you get ahead and be ready for the best that law school has to offer.
We train you to think analytically about texts and issues, just as you'll be expected to in law school, and offer a thorough introduction to intellectual history and philosophy over four semesters.
Thinking about Graduate School?
Do you know that most Ph.D. programs require two foreign languages for the degree? Knowing German when you enter will immediately give you an edge. Also, you will be able to read seminal scholarship in the original, without losing the nuance and subtlety that is inevitable in translation. With many Nobel Prize winners in fields from chemistry and physics to literature and economics, German scholars have often been leaders in the field.
- We encourage you to write an honors thesis that combines German with your other field of interest.
Can you fit this in?
Keep in mind that you can enroll in our upper division courses taught in English while you are starting to learn the language. Our classes rarely have wait lists, and we always try to accommodate double majors. The department also offers intensive language workshops during the summer that allow you to complete a whole year of German in only 10 or 15 weeks. The classes in the department will allow you to fulfill several breadth requirements for the College of L & S. And half the major requirements may be completed while studying abroad! If you are completing a double major in German and History, Comparative Literature, History of Art, Political Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, Music, Linguistics or Film, among other majors, you will be able to count two upper division courses to complete requirements for both majors.
Remember that you are allowed a higher unit ceiling as a double major:
A proposed planned program may contain an unlimited number of units beyond the 120 semester units required for graduation on condition that all requirements for the double major will be completed within a maximum of nine semesters (or the equivalent) in all institutions attended. A proposed planned program for a double major will be approved if, according to the proposed program, the student will have completed no more than 136 semester units prior to the last semester and enrollment in the last semester will not extend his or her enrollment beyond nine semesters, or the equivalent, in all institutions attended.
